Cornfields, with their towering stalks and peaceful landscapes, can seem like harmless places, but they can quickly become hazardous for people, children, and even small pets. The uniform rows and dense foliage make it easy to lose one’s way, and these fields can become a disorienting, dangerous trap for those who wander in.

Once inside, the towering corn blocks visibility in all directions, creating a maze-like environment. Even in daylight, it’s easy to lose sight of familiar landmarks. The noise from the rustling stalks can also make it hard to hear voices or calls for help. For children, who may venture in while playing, and small pets, who might chase a scent or wander, cornfields are especially perilous. The narrow rows and dense cover create conditions where panic can set in, and without a clear way out, things can go from bad to worse quickly.

For small pets like dogs or cats, the situation is even more dire. Their small size and lower vantage point make it nearly impossible for them to find their way out on their own. Pets can also be more vulnerable to exhaustion, dehydration, or injury while lost in such conditions, making the need for a quick response even more critical.

Thermal Drones: A Life-Saving Tool for Rescues

In cases where time is crucial, drones equipped with thermal imaging cameras are a game-changer. Thermal drones can quickly scan large areas, detecting body heat from lost individuals or pets, even in visually obstructed environments like cornfields. Whether it’s day or night, thermal imaging allows search teams to locate missing people or animals far faster than traditional ground searches could. See the image below illustrating the visual difference using thermal imaging.

Side-by-side comparison: On the left, our thermal imaging reveals the lost subject clearly highlighted in red, showcasing her body heat against the dense cornfield. On the right, the same scene captured with a standard camera illustrates the challenge of locating her, demonstrating the power and effectiveness of thermal aerial searches in rescue operations.

Case Study: A Real-Life Demonstration

To demonstrate just how easy it is to get lost in a cornfield, our team conducted a controlled case study with a brave adult volunteer. She ventured only 8 rows into the field and immediately became disoriented. Despite the close proximity of massive 400-foot wind turbines—normally towering landmarks—she couldn’t see them or find her way out.

As the disorientation set in, we used our drone, equipped with both thermal imaging and real-time video, to locate her within minutes. By coordinating with her over the phone and using the drone as a guide, we safely directed her out of the field. This case study proved how easily a person, even with nearby landmarks, can get lost in the dense rows of corn, and how effective drones are in swiftly aiding rescues.

Without thermal, its near impossible to find our brave volunteer. We promise, she's in this photo. Can you find her? She's even wearing a hi-vis orange & reflective vest!

Conclusion: Be Aware, Stay Safe

Cornfields can seem like a peaceful escape, but they can be surprisingly dangerous for children, adults, and pets. Educating loved ones about the risks, setting boundaries, and always keeping an eye on small pets are key steps to staying safe. And in the unfortunate event that someone gets lost, thermal drones provide a fast, effective tool in locating and rescuing them before the situation becomes critical.

Thank you, the reader, for your time. Super special thanks to our beautiful, strong and courageous volunteer, Ashley Richards.
